About Calcined Kaolin

Calcined kaolin is being dried, calcined at temperatures generally between about 1000–1050 °C to remove chemically bonded water and form a partially amorphous, anhydrous alumino-silicate known as metakaolin. This thermally activated control extensively changes the optical, mechanical and surface properties of the mineral: higher brightness, hardness and functionality are achieved compared hydrous kaolin.

In paints and coatings & other related applications, calcined kaolin yields high performance as a component which will improve the value of resin for ease of paint application and resistance to dirt, weathering colour fade, gloss retention etc., apart from enhancing wo not consume loaded property due to its coarse surface texture in dry film & thus also impart better dry hiding / opacity with easier dispersion for cost economy ( Even partial replacement of TiO2).

Advantages

Key Benefits

Why Calcined Kaolin is preferred across demanding industrial formulations.

01

High brightness & whiteness Improves opacity , color development and visual clean in white and pastel coatings.

02

Opacity & TiO₂ extension Enhances the performance of dry hiding and scattering, so that some TiO2 can be replaced without sacrifice of properties.

03

Optimized surface chemistry Advantage Increases the scrub resistance, stain resistance and coating resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Important information about Calcined Kaolin, grades and applications.

Calcined kaolin (metakaolin) is thermally treated kaolin clay with chemically bound water removed, resulting in higher brightness, hardness, and opacity.

Hydrous kaolin retains structural water and is softer, whereas calcined kaolin is anhydrous, more rigid, and provides superior opacity enhancement.

It functions as a TiO₂ extender, improving dry hiding, film build, and cost efficiency—especially in matt and satin coatings.

Yes. It is widely used in glazes and whiteware bodies to improve whiteness, thermal stability, and mechanical strength.

Yes. Multiple grades are available based on particle size, brightness, and end-use performance requirements.
